5) WHAT IS CUBAN SALSA?
Salsa is the most well-known and the most popular of all Latin dance styles. Salsa comes from Cuba, being originally a couple dance. In the past decades solo salsa for women, called salsa ladystyling - became increasingly popular.
It is a very energetic, happy, elegant and sensual dance, involving a lot of hip and shoulder movement, elegance and strength.
There are many different salsa styles, but all of them derived from the original Cuban salsa. The modern Cuban salsa is usually a fusion of salsa and Afrocuban dances such as Cuban Rumba.
Cuban Rumba is considered the mother of Cuban Salsa. It is a folkloric Afrocuban dance with heavy African influence. The music consists mainly of drums and voice only, and other musical instruments are used rarely. Originally a couple dance, it represents a man trying to conquer a woman. The dance itself is very sensual with very pronounced hip and shoulder movement. Even though it is traditionally a partner dance, the dancers dance individually, and women may use accessories such as long skirts, fans and shawls (which you ironically find in flamenco as well).
Cuban Salsa therefore is a term to describe the modern and the most popular fusion of Salsa with Rumba.
